Exaggerated Antenna

Look at this amazing beetle, how big his antennas are! The male beetle’s huge gill-shaped antennas are features of Melolonthidae family, which contains the largest number of species in Scarabaeoidea. This is Polyphylla laticollis Lewis, one of the biggest beetle in Beijing. I got it near the village (here) where one of my friend was working as I’ve memtioned in previous post. We searching bugs together and found it under a light.

  1. What a fantastic beetle this is Mingfei!! I have not seen an antennae like this. We have a lot of the Scarabaeoidea family here too.

I have just thought of it, you might want to go and have a look at this local site done by one of our universities. It has a lot of interesting bugs on it. I have offered to give them my photographs to add, but it seems they are not interested unfortunately.

Thank you Joan. I love this great site! It just attracts me to have a visit to Africa!
I suppose they didn't accept your pics because your species have already been recorded. Maybe they will be happy if you could deliver something they don't have.

There are many Chinese biology sites, but mostly are built in Chinese. Here is an site which has collected many Chinese insects, plants and birds but available in English and I want to recommend it to you:

  4. Thanks for this link Mingfei. I will check it out over the weekend.

Thanks for the kind words about my site. It is fun to do and I am glad I stared it and can share my small world of insects with people like you although as you can see I do try to put other things on which other people might be interested in.

No, that site does not have the species and this is why I cant understand why they do not want the photographs. I think it is a case of there is no one there who wants to take the time to actually put it on the site. People can be very lazy sometimes.

Well maybe when you have finished studying you will get the chance to travel to Africa. It is a very interesting place. You should check out some of the places like Kruger National Game Reserve on which I did a long travelogue of the animals, accommodation etc to be found there. I think you would really enjoy a visit and if you ever came over, I would take you to some of my favorite places. :)

  10. Interesting blog you got here. It would be great to read more concerning this topic. The only thing your blog needs is a few pics of some gizmos.
